I thought all microchips were the same?2023-04-26T16:12:58+00:00

All microchips are not the same. Choose wisely and make it count! We design and control our manufacturing process.  We are approved by the FDA and USDA for safety and reliability.

There are many parts that make up a tiny microchip, and there is a critical difference in the quality of these parts and where they are sourced. Our parts are sourced from the best suppliers around the world. Quality control is essential. The microchip can not fail when it is needed most!

Microchip ID Systems makes the CatChip.  We put 30 years of expertise and customer care experience into everything we sell.  A microchip is installed once – for a lifetime.

Do you have a free microchip program?2023-03-15T16:54:16+00:00

We offer free chips through our Partner Hub™ program. As the title suggests, we invite pet professionals to partner with us to get more microchipped cats registered – so that the chip can do its job. Call and talk to us today! 800-434-2843

Tell me about your SafePlaces program.2024-10-28T16:46:27+00:00

SafePlaces is what the name implies! When a cat or kitten is registered with us, the owner can list ‘Safe Places’ in their member profile. These are locations where the pet can be dropped off and kept safe if the owner cannot be reached or is out of town. When someone finds your pet, they will contact us, and we supply the ‘safe place’. This ensures your pet stays out of the shelter and out of harm’s way.

What happens to my cat if the chip is not registered?2022-03-17T23:43:18+00:00

The chip is your cat’s lifeline to you, but only if it is registered.

An unregistered microchip is simply a number. It means that if your cat is lost or separated from you, the chip serves no purpose. Your cat can be adopted, kept at a shelter, or even euthanized if the chip has no connection to you.

However, if that number is connected to you in our database, we can alert you in minutes when your cat is found. A registered chip is a nationwide time-tested method for reuniting pets and their people – fast.

The microchip ‘speaks’ for your cat: “I have a home and people who love me. Contact my owner!” Registration is simple and it makes ALL the difference. Do it now. Get peace of mind and mark it off your list!  [Register and Learn]

Can all microchip scanners read the CatChip?2023-04-26T18:24:52+00:00

Yes! All scanners currently used in the pet industry can read the CatChip.  Our microchip products can be read by scanners around the world because our chips are ISO certified and compliant, meaning they meet international and national standards for animal identification.

If you have any questions, give us a call at 800-434-2843.

Is there an annual fee to keep my chip registered?2022-03-17T16:45:55+00:00

No.  No renewal fees. No annual fees.  Your registration is maintained with full Member Benefits for as long as you own your pet. You only pay a one time initial fee, and you may not even have to pay that if your breeder, rescue, or vet has paid it for you!

Are the chips I buy registered to me?2023-04-26T18:26:04+00:00

PLEASE NOTE: Buying a microchip is not the same as registering it. It is essential that a microchipped cat be connected to the owner in a registry designed for that purpose. Otherwise, it’s just a number.

When you order microchips from Microchip ID Systems, they are documented in our database as being sold to you. This is not the same as proving ownership and holds no claim of ownership (for an individual cat) with licensing or legal authorities.

Additionally, our modern services such as SearchALERT and Safe Places are only available for registered pets and owners.

Is the microchip a GPS device?2022-03-15T19:50:07+00:00

No.  A microchip installed under the skin of an animal is NOT a GPS device.  The microchip does not have a battery or power source, which is required for live GPS tracking. Microchips respond to radio wave signals initiated by a scanner.

The technology required to incorporate a lifelong battery for a GPS device small enough to fit into a mini microchip (yes, THAT small) is not currently available.

What about microchip migration (after they are installed)?2022-03-17T15:15:49+00:00

Microchips will not migrate if they are properly installed.

Our microchips are coated with a smooth bio-compatible sealer called Parylene™. This coating not only seals the glass but helps the chip bond easily to the tissue under the skin, preventing migration.

What is the Pet Microchip Lookup Tool?2022-03-17T23:42:07+00:00

There is only one official Pet Microchip Lookup Tool. It is a free search engine operated by The American Animal Hospital Association.  The website is HERE. It is free to use worldwide. Thousands of microchip numbers are entered and searched daily through the AAHA platform.

It is the go-to destination for veterinarians, shelters, rescues, and others when they find a lost pet with a chip. They are looking for the registry where the owner has enrolled the pet. Note: the Pet Microchip Lookup system is NOT a database. It stores no info. It simply points the user to the Registry where owner info is stored. If a cat’s chip is not registered, the lookup tool cannot find the owner.

Note:  All pets registered in our registry at BuddyID.com are automatically trackable in the Pet Microchip Lookup network.

Guide to Choosing a Microchip Company2022-07-10T23:01:14+00:00

Choosing a Microchip Provider and a Microchip Registry are important decisions. The chip you purchase and install will be a lifelong identifier for the animal. It will need to perform on demand, not just for loss or theft, but for regulatory, travel, legal situations, medical care and much more.

Since 1989 we have been an industry leader. Our Guide below is just what you need.  An unbiased and straightforward Check List of what to look for and what to avoid.

Guide to Choosing a Microchip Company

Does your Registry have live customer care?2022-03-17T16:09:56+00:00

Yes.  And here is why:  When a pet is lost, missing or stolen, an owner wants to talk to a real person. Circumstances vary. Conversation is required. Human minds need to be on task to get pets home fast. It is important to sort out the details.  None of this can be achieved by a robotic registry.

Our highly trained team knows how to help owners, vets and shelters who are dealing with a lost or found companion animal situation. Trained specialists are available by phone seven days a week.

What is the problem with these ‘900’ microchips?2023-04-26T18:41:38+00:00

Those who rely upon microchips to reunite pets and owners have voiced concerns about a type of ISO chip that begins with these three numbers: 900 (nine-zero-zero).

The concerns are centered around ease of tracking the chip back to the maker/distributor.  There are over 70 companies who share the 900 codes, meaning they all start with 900.  By contrast, about 20 companies have earned an unshared code, such as 933, 985, 965, making them easier to track to the source because they are unique.

Therefore, we provide advice as follows:

It is more difficult to quickly track a shared code 900 chip to their overseas and/or out-of-reach manufacturers. If a pet has a ‘900’ chip, it MUST be registered in a database so the owner can be quickly contacted.

Many vendors of 900 shared code chips acknowledge that they cannot track the chips they sell. Most, not all, of these vendors do not participate in the national pet tracking system. If you decide to use chips beginning with the 900 code, contact the maker and ask the hard questions: Failure rate, sterilization process, readability, conformance with standards, distributors, etc.

Irresponsible microchip manufacturing and/or record keeping can threaten the tried-and-true dependable system that pet owners and care-givers in the United States have come to rely upon.

Microchip ID Systems Position: there is a clear responsibility that comes with the manufacturing and sale of microchips for animals.  Microchips should always be trackable to a source.  Company or vendor contact information should be available. A real time, live Call Center is mandatory.

Should I use ISO chips for cats?2022-03-06T00:19:36+00:00

The microchip world has moved to the ISO standard. We only manufacture the Certified ISO standard as it recognized worldwide and can be read by scanners in use across the USA. For international travel, your pet is required to have a 15 digit ISO microchip.

* Beware:  Do not use an ISO chip that begins with the first three digits of 900 (nine-zero-zero).  These are shared temporary ISO manufacturers who are not in the USA, making it is nearly impossible for a lost pet to be reunited with his owner, especially if the chip has not been registered.

Microchips for Disaster Preparedness. Any tips?2022-03-09T00:10:22+00:00

Yes.  The biggest tip is: REGISTER THE MICROCHIP! If an owner is separated from his cat, a registered microchip is the critical link to reunite them.  Owners can access their proof of ownership from the cloud to claim their pet!

In times of natural disaster or emergency, scanning for microchips is the ideal and preferred method of identifying pets and equines and reuniting them with registered owners.  Microchip ID Systems works with national disaster preparedness groups across America.

Disaster teams know the power of a registered chip when animal and owner have been separated.  It is the difference between being reunited or not.

As one of the longest standing microchip companies in the United States, Microchip ID Systems has maintained a pet and an equine database for nearly 20 years.  Our network makes information available to recovery teams and law enforcement agencies who locate missing or stolen cats.

What are the statistics on microchip success stories?2022-03-17T16:41:00+00:00

1.  A study of more than 7,700 stray animals at animal shelters showed that dogs without microchips were returned to their owners 21.9% of the time, whereas microchipped dogs were returned to their owners 52.2% of the time.

2. Cats without microchips were reunited with their owners only 1.8% of the time, whereas microchipped cats went back home 38.5% of the time. (Lord et al, JAVMA, July 15, 2009)

3. Over 200,000 microchip scanners have been placed with animal care givers across the United States.  Nearly all found dogs get scanned for a microchip.

4. For microchipped animals that weren’t returned to their owners, most of the time it was due to incorrect owner information (or no owner information) in the microchip registry database.

Moral of these stories:  Register the microchip and keep owner information updated!

Does the AVMA have a position on microchips?2022-03-17T16:30:38+00:00

The American Veterinary Medical Association recommends a Certified ISO microchip for all species.
From AVMA.org:  “The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA), American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA), World Small Animal Veterinary Medical Association (WSAVA), and American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) endorse the use of electronic identification in animals and support the implementation of ISO standard 11784/11785 in the U.S.” Read entire article here.

Are your chips ISO Certified?2023-03-10T21:28:19+00:00

Yes. We manufacture only Certified ISO microchips.  ISO refers to the ‘International Standards Organization’.
To be certified as ISO, the chip must be manufactured as follows:
1)  Operate at a radio frequency of 134.2 kHz.
2)  Contain 15 digits, the first three of which are the unique assigned manufacturer ‘code’. * See note.
3)  Our unique code is : 933000123456789

We also make a special ISO chip that has been approved by the USDA and the FDA for compliance within livestock industries.

BEWARE:   Do not use microchips that begin with the NON unique ISO code of 900 (nine-zero-zero).  There are hundreds of companies (outside of the USA) that have been issued these shared ISO manufacturer codes.  It is impossible to track an unregistered ‘900’ chip back to a manufacturer or an owner.

What microchip is required for international travel?2022-03-09T00:11:18+00:00

Simple. You need a Certified ISO microchip.  The chip number must be 15-digits long and meet the specifications of the International Standards Organization. (ISO)
